The U. S. Chamber praises the release of a recent National Petroleum Council (NPC) report, Facing the Hard Truths About Energy: A Comprehensive View to 2030 of Global Oil and Natural Gas, for its realistic portrayal of U. S. energy needs. “this report underscores the importance of secure and diverse supplies of abundant, affordable, and clean energy on which our economy, environment, and way of life depend,” say General James L. Jones USMC (Ret.) president and CEO of the Chamber’s Institute for 21st Century Energy.
Lee Raymond, former CEO of ExxonMobil and Chair of NPC, led a team of more than 350 experts through an extensive 18-month study requested by U.S. Energy Secretary Samuel Bodman. Here are some of the study’s conclusions:
Coal, oil and natural gas will remain critical components of America’s energy mix.
The global supply of energy is not running out, but recovery will come with increasing risks.
The United States must expand utilization of all forms of energy including oil, natural gas, coal, nuclear, and renewables. Our nation should stress energy security over energy independence in the immediate term.
The energy sector workforce is aging and will require new scientists and engineers.
Reducing CO2 emissions will have economic costs and will require reduced demand.
The Institute of 21st Century Energy is driving the debate on a national energy policy by presenting solid research, compelling facts, and strong arguments and is advancing sound legislative and regulatory approaches to the nation’s energy challenges.
